Meet Shalu Bansal, M.D.
Dr. Bansal is dual board-certified in Family Medicine and Sleep Medicine. She practiced Family Medicine for nine years, including five years at Duke Primary Care, where she provided comprehensive, evidence-based care and built meaningful, long-term relationships with her patients.
During her time in primary care, she developed a strong appreciation for the critical role sleep plays in overall health. She observed firsthand how sleep disorders can significantly impact the management of chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and mood disorders. This growing interest led her to pursue advanced training in sleep medicine.
Dr. Bansal completed her fellowship at Duke University and subsequently joined the Duke University division of Sleep Medicine as a faculty physician. Most recently she transitioned from academic practice to establish her own clinic, with a mission to expand access to comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Frequently Asked Questions
What conditions do you treat?
We evaluate and treat a wide range of sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, insomnia, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia, REM sleep behavior disorder, and other parasomnias.
Do I need a referral to schedule an appointment?
In most cases, a referral is not required. However, some insurance plans may require one for coverage. Our office can help guide you through any insurance-related requirements.
What is a home sleep study?
A home sleep study is a convenient, non-invasive test performed in your own bed using portable monitoring equipment. It helps diagnose conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea by measuring breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and sleep-related events.
Do you offer in-lab sleep studies?
While many patients can be evaluated with home sleep testing, we also coordinate referrals to a trusted sleep laboratory for in-lab studies when additional testing is needed.
What is CPAP therapy?
CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy is the most common treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It delivers gentle air pressure through a mask to keep the airway open during sleep. We provide full CPAP setup, mask fitting, monitoring, and ongoing support.
What if I cannot tolerate CPAP?
We work closely with patients who have difficulty tolerating CPAP. Alternative options may include mask adjustments, pressure modifications, alternative PAP devices, oral appliance therapy referrals, surgical referrals or other individualized treatment strategies.
Do you treat insomnia?
Yes. We evaluate the underlying causes of insomnia and offer treatment options that may include behavioral strategies, medication management when appropriate, and referrals for cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which is considered first-line treatment.
Do you offer virtual visits?
Yes. Telehealth visits are available for consultations, follow-ups, and ongoing management of sleep disorders, providing convenient access to care from home.
How do I prepare for my first visit?
Please bring a list of your medications, relevant medical history, prior sleep studies and CPAP machines (if available).
What should I expect during my first appointment?
Your initial consultation includes a detailed review of your sleep concerns, medical history, and symptoms. We will discuss possible diagnoses and outline a personalized plan, which may include sleep testing or treatment options.
